A Letter from the Directors

We challenged ourselves in 2017 to instigate change that is widespread – decentralizing our efforts from our capital city and reaching new neighborhoods, connecting with new ideas, inspirations, and people, and bringing our designers closer to the region and the world.

The first iteration of Amman Design Week was ignited by a spark. It came together through the synergy of unified movements; a delicate choreography combining ambitions, skills, and talents dedicated to develop and drive design initiatives that improve lives and bolster Jordan’s creative economy.

In 2017, that original spark builds momentum and evolves into a full fledged movement. We are optimistic about design and its capabilities – the designers, institutions and people who work together towards the creation and innovation of ideas that can improve the functionality and aesthetics of our city, raise awareness for the importance and appreciation of the environment, and public space and civic duty. It is within the confines of our city, a city that calls for advancement and innovation, that we realized: we have all that we need right here.

From technologists, designers, and activists to entrepreneurs, policy-makers, civilians and craft makers, we are united in developing a process that enables transformation; whether it's the transformation that occurs when people of diverse backgrounds are linked, or creating awareness on the transformative power of design in our daily lives.

The design industry in Jordan needs a revolution; a movement from within that bands designers with makers, government with people, creativity with practicality and sustainability, all the while establishing a solid and interdependent design network. This year’s themed program focuses on the movement galvanized by design; all that shapes us, drives us, unites us. The nine days of exhibitions, activations, events and installations, are a culmination of what we all worked hard to achieve to further the development of this creative learning platform.

We challenged ourselves in 2017 to instigate change that is widespread – decentralizing our efforts from our capital city and reaching new neighborhoods, connecting with new ideas, inspirations, and people, and bringing our designers closer to the region and the world. Amman Design Week is not just in Amman; it is in Irbid, Mafraq, Karak, and Zarqa, and it is in Beirut, Dubai, and Milan.

It is the deep-rooted recognition of our responsibility that drives us as a community. Through joint efforts we have addressed challenges in education and transportation, the ethical use of technology and digital fabrication, and receptiveness in manufacturing. We strive to carry a conversation forward through reliable, creative press, and spur movement in tourism and the economy.

We cannot do this alone; so let’s do it together.
